World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was held this year on the 1st of December with this years theme “Take Action. No Discrimination”. World AIDS Day is observed in over 190 countries around the world, with the aim to raise awareness in the community about HIV/AIDS, including the need for support and understanding as well as education and prevention initiatives.

The key messages related to World AIDS day include:

  • HIV is still here in Australia it hasn’t gone away.
  • HIV related stigma and discrimination still exits and it needs to be challenged.
  • People with HIV experience stigma and discrimination in their daily lives; at work, family, community and access to health careHIV is still here in Australia it hasn’t gone away.
  • HIV is preventable.
  • You can prevent HIV transmission by:
  • Using condoms and water based lubricants for sex with new and casual partners,
  • getting tested for HIV
  • never sharing injecting equipment
