Recommended reading!

Are you a fan of the tv series “Downton Abbey”? Have you wondered how wives and daughters really lived in country house society over a century ago? The answer can be found in our new book, “The real life women of Downton Abbey” by Pamela Ho…rn. The book explores the lives of these very real ladies from their childhood and marriage to their role as “Lady Bountiful”. This is a time before society was utterly changed by the First World War and it’s aftermath. We recommend you read it today!

Teddy Bears are ready for home

The Casino Library’s first ever Teddy Bear Sleepover has been a huge success. A total of 20 bears and friends were left with the staff with strict instructions to take good care of them. The bears had such a wonderful time that they said they wanted to stay! But we explained to them that their owners would be starting to miss them, so now they are ready to be picked up, along with photos of their library adventure. Thank you for joining  this exciting event, and we look forward to doing it all again next year!

Teddy Bear Sleepover

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Last week the Casino Library held its very first Teddy Bear Sleepover! Children from our preschool storytime program left Teddy bears and soft toys of all shapes and sizes with instructions to take good care of them, which we did. At the end of the day, staff tucked them into bed for the night thinking they would sleep peacefully until the next morning….

When we returned to work the following day it was apparent that they did anything but sleep! Hidden cameras caught them getting into all sorts of mischief and it seems they had such a wonderful time, they want to do it again next year! They are now ready to go home with their owners, along with photos of their adventure.

Book Review: “The Kitchen Daughter” by Jael McHenry

I stayed up until 2am so that I could read this novel in one session. This is the story of a family with Asperger’s syndrome and what it means to be normal. Food and cooking are Ginny’slife support and recipes give shape to the book as well as conjuring up the ghosts of the writers. A very satisfying book about loss as well as finding the truth.
RUTH HAIG

After the unexpected death of her parents, painfully shy and sheltered 26-year-old Ginny Selvaggio seeks comfort in cooking from family recipes. But the rich, peppery scent of her Nonna’s soup draws an unexpected visitor into the kitchen: the ghost of Nonna herself, dead for twenty years, who appears with a cryptic warning (“do no let her…”) before vanishing like steam from a cooling dish.A haunted kitchen isn’t Ginny’s only challenge. Her domineering sister, Amanda, (aka “Demanda”) insists on selling their parents’ house, the only home Ginny has ever known. As she packs up her parents’ belongings, Ginny finds evidence of family secrets she isn’t sure how to unravel. She knows how to turn milk into cheese and cream into butter, but she doesn’t know why her mother hid a letter in the bedroom chimney, or the identity of the woman in her father’s photographs. The more she learns, the more she realizes the keys to these riddles lie with the dead, and there’s only one way to get answers: cook from dead people’s recipes, raise their ghosts, and ask them.
